Meek Campaign: Republican-Tea Party Skirmish Does Not Help Hurting Florida Families

Lake City, Fla. - Kendrick Meek's U.S. Senate campaign manager, Abe Dyk, responded to the war of words concerning the census between Governor Charlie Crist and Speaker Marco Rubio. The statement follows:

"Today's fight over the census proves that Governor Crist and Speaker Rubio are focused on a petty intra-party fight that puts ideology over the concerns of everyday Floridians,"said Dyk. "Kendrick Meek is focused on creating jobs for all Floridians, not playing political games that do nothing to improve the lives of Florida's families."

Yesterday, a Rubio spokesman told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune that Rubio did not support counting illegal immigrants in the census. Rubio does "not support a congressional reapportionment process that counts illegal immigrant populations when allocating seats," the spokesman said.

Today, Crist called Rubio's position "absurd" and accused him of playing politics on the issue. "The notion that you would not want to accept federal funding to make a political statement is absurd," Governor Crist said.
