Florida AFL-CIO Endorsement
The Florida AFL-CIO Endorses Congressman Kendrick Meek in the Democratic Primary for the United States Senate
Tallahassee – On October 7th, 200 labor leaders from across Florida, meeting at the 2009 Biennial Convention of the Florida AFL-CIO, voted unanimously to endorse Congressman Kendrick Meek in the Democratic Primary for the United States Senate. The Florida AFL-CIO is the state federation of over 500 local unions collectively representing 500,000 workers, retirees and their families. This endorsement means that Congressman Meek will be able to count on the labor movement’s political operation, which has grown over the past several years to be one of the largest and most successful grassroots programs in Florida politics.
Mike Williams, the newly elected President of the Florida AFL-CIO, spoke in favor of the endorsement. He said, “Congressman Meek is a great supporter of Florida’s workers, a great man who has stood up for working families throughout his long and distinguished career as a member of the Florida House, the Florida Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. His service to Florida’s working families has been exemplary in these troubled economic times.”
Kendrick Meek’s background as the child of a working mother, a hard working teenage skycap and his service as a State Trooper has given him an incredible amount of insight into the needs of working people. As a member of Florida’s Legislature, Kendrick Meek championed the issues working families care about, like quality public schools. As a Congressman, Meek has proven to be a tireless fighter for protecting Social Security, ensuring access to health insurance for our children and the creation of sustainable green jobs for Florida’s workers. Mike Williams said, “This endorsement is a testament to Kendrick Meek’s strong record of looking out for Florida’s workers, their families and our retirees.”
