An Uncivil Union
Which senator does Marco Rubio most admire? Right-wing extremist Jim Demint. In a profile in the NY Times, reporter Mark Leibovich wrote, "When I asked Rubio recently which current senator he most admires, he said DeMint." [NY Times, "The First Senator from the Tea Party?", 1/10/2010]
Senator Demint believes that gay Americans and sexually-active single mothers should not be allowed to teach. According to CNN, "Speaking at a church rally in Spartanburg, South Carolina, DeMint told attendees people quietly told him he should not back down from a position he took in 2004 that openly gay individuals and single mothers who are involved in a sexual relationship should not be allowed to teach. He did not weigh in on whether unwed men should be allowed to teach." [CNN, "Demint Takes Heat for Gays, Unwed Moms Comment", 10/5/2010]
Demint would rather have "30 Marco Rubios" in the senate rather than a majority including Republican moderates. At the right-wing Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Demint stated, "I'd rather have 30 Marco Rubios than 60 Arlen Specters." [Miami Herald, Naked Politics Blog, "Rubio, Demint, and the 2012 SC Primary", 2/24/2010]
DeMint supports privatizing Social Security. Jim DeMint's senate website lists creating private Social Security accounts as a policy he supports. His site reads: DeMint also believes that we must address the fact that we are not currently providing workers with real ownership of the money they pay into the system and wealth is never allowed to be accumulated and passed on to children or grandchildren. The answer to this: personal Social Security savings accounts. These accounts would give younger workers the opportunity to build wealth and control their futures so that when they retire they will not have to live month-to-month relying on the government for a check. Personal Social Security savings accounts will make every American a saver and an investor. [DeMint's Senate Website, accessed 10/26/2010].
