Gold Standard

Rubio has entertained the idea of returning to the gold standard

Does Rubio Think We Should Return to the Gold Standard? On May 15, 2009 Rubio indicated that arguments favoring a return to the gold standard are valid and have merits. The exchange during a question period at a meet and greet went as follows:

Question: What do you think of the fiat money system and the fact that right now our money is based on nothing in the federal reserve. Can you... Rubio: He asked a question what do I believe about, that our money system is not based on the gold standard – or any... Well here’s the problem with that. When America moved away from the gold standard, and whether or not we should go back right now is becoming a serious debate right now, and the reason why is because of the way we print currency. The more of the currency your printing to fund this debt and the more money the country owes -- the less devalued your currency becomes. So I think there’s a legitimate concern about the value of our currency. The currency of the United States of America – that dollar bill in your pocket – it’s backed by the full faith and credit of the of the government. There’s nothing behind it. There’s not a gold bar somewhere worth a dollar backing your dollar. [Marco Rubio on the Stump, 5/15/2009 Part 2 (5:18 to 6:04), Link]
