Honoring Senator Edward Kennedy

08.26.09 by Kendrick Meek

Ted Kennedy

Today this nation lost one of our finest leaders. The lion of the U.S. Senate fought on our behalf for issues that concern our families.

From improving education for our children, to strengthening the quality of health care for our seniors, to championing civil rights and equality for all Americans - Senator Edward Kennedy served the people of Massachusetts but he represented a grateful nation.

Senator Kennedy was the patriarch of a family that gave this nation so much, and as he comforted the nation time and again, we as Americans must now be there for the Kennedy family during this time of mourning.

I am thinking about my friend too, Senator Kennedy’s son Patrick who is a colleague of mine in Congress, and I know how difficult a time this is for him.

Senator Kennedy mentored younger public servants as they matured in the political process, and his words of encouragement to me will last a lifetime.  I will work to do my part to implement his vision as a Member of Congress.

This is a day of sadness but a time for reflection too. We are fortunate to have served as witnesses to Senator Kennedy’s greatness.
